Salon des Refusés is the culmination of artist Yvette Brackman's postdoc at SMK – the National Gallery of Denmark: a densely layered installation, folding histories of forgotten Danish Jewish women artists with Brackman's personal family stories of identity, memory and diaspora.
Like a book unfolded in space, I designed the text rich exhibition graphics and assisted the artist with the layout of the room, artworks and floor graphics.
In the design research, I stumbled upon an elegant display typeface drawn in the 1930s by the German Jewish designer Elisabeth Friedländer. Her personal story resonated so well with the stories in Brackman’s work, that we decided to use the typeface for the headlines in the exhibition and include a a wall text about it.
